"Adopting a pet has changed my life by giving it a new purpose (quite literally, in terms of my career!)."
Anita Shyam works as the communications manager for a non-profit organization called United Way of Mumbai, which also sponsors the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon. Scotch and Dusk, two stray cats she discovered through World For All, were adopted by her. Initially, she only intended to take Scotch (formerly known as Boy), but she couldn't resist taking in the runt of the litter, whom she named Dusk.
A ginger kitten named Boy, available for adoption, was one of the first posts Anita saw when she initially discovered World for All on Facebook. She found that Boy and his five siblings were discovered bound and gagged inside a plastic bag that had been discarded in the trash. A bystander saved them. One of the six kittens, unfortunately, passed away that day. Although she had never adopted a pet, she was urged to take in a pair of kittens. The adoption coordinator advised that she send Boy, his siblings, and a few other kittens over so Anita could witness firsthand how happy they are when they have similar company.
In an effort to win Boy over, she made a makeshift bed for him and purchased him a few toys. Unfortunately, Boy ignored her the entire night (because cats!) There was no way she could have chosen another kitten, so she knew she had to be patient. She had prepared Boy a bed, but one small person had moved in and made himself at home. Boy's unidentified brother, a skinny kitten that was very underweight, was this one (he was even having difficulty finding a home, given his appearance). To avoid waking him up or moving him, she let him be. So she decided it would be best to adopt both brothers.
Scotch was given a new name, and Dusk was given to the unidentified kitten. Her whole attitude on life, along with her entire lifestyle, radically changed by having her two boys around. The best choice she had ever made in her life had been to adopt these brothers, who are as different as can be. Dusk is a joker with no regard for others' privacy. He is a naughty explorer who destroyed her copy of The Lord of the Rings within the first week of meeting him. On the other hand, Scotch is the laid-back, remorseful, worried softy who used to be bullied by Dusk all the time. Because of his personality, it took him two years to climb into her lap.
After adopting, she decided to leave my lucrative corporate position and devote myself full-time to the development sector. As their manager of branding and strategy for a year, she joined WFA. She saved a lot of time busting cat myths, assisting cat adoptions, and developing fundraising strategies for cat spaying and neutering. After a year, she relocated to the United Way of Mumbai. She continues to serve as the page's administrator and is a member of the core adoption team Now!
