5 Reasons Behind Dogs Howl at Night

Most of us are curious to know behind this unusual activity by dogs during the night, Howling. Howling sound is quite strange and sounds very much similar to wolf howl. It is a known fact that the dogs belong to wolf’s family or the other way around. There are plenty of superstitious and scientific concepts behind the act and some of them sounds really interesting.


1. Vocal Communication

Some of the researches prove that the howling is their natural way of vocal communication, which sends a signal or message to its pack members, who are separated. Dogs choose to howl at night, as there will be less noise in both urban and in forest areas. This process or method helps them to locate their separated pack members to find each other. It is pretty common that wild dogs and wolves howl at every night, whereas the domestic dogs would rarely howl because of noise pollution in urban localities.

2. Territorial Presence

Most of the dogs and wolves inherit this character by making a territory in their location and this act can be seen with domestic dogs as well. Dogs and wolves howl to mention or warn other dogs about their territory. This helps them in sending messages to other dogs of the same territory, as they form a pack to fight against encroaching.

3. Separation Anxiety

Dogs are one of the most emotional creatures on the earth after human beings and Elephants. Most of the dogs die due to depression and this can be experienced with fellow creatures, humans, kins and the location. Dogs know to trigger for a missed pack member and tries to send messages and has abilities to receive messages at the same time. Most of the dogs howl before hunting, as they can emotionally sense a feeling of separation after hunting.

4. Attention Seeking

Dogs are known as the best companions to the human being and dogs would love to be utmost loyal to gain human being’s love and affection. Most of the dogs are active and prefer to stay and play with the owner as a sign of loyalty and love towards the human beings. If barking is not working to gain enough attention, they tend to howl slowly for a smaller period of time to gain your attention. They are known to understand our signs and language and tries to give utmost entertainment as possible.

5. Isolation Distress

If a dog is left unattended for a longer period of time, it tends to fall ill and get depressed. Dogs feel isolated and tends to do unusual activities to be occupied and howl at time to beat the isolation distress. It is a common sign for dogs, who have been left alone for a long time at home or in a commercial location. You can see people complaining about making strange noises, howling and even tear up the carpet and furniture. Isolation anxiety is pretty common in dogs and can be cured only with a human companion or by adapting one more pet.

6. Excitement While Being Happy

Some of the wild dogs and estate dogs howl when they are excited.  They howl in front of the owners to get praised and to showcase their success. As howling is a natural mode of communication, dogs and wolves howl only when it is necessary to communicate with other pack members or fellow creatures. You can see that wolves in the forest howl during the night, as they would have had a decent or a fantastic hunt and to celebrate the success of it.

7. Medical Issues

It is a rare symptom, where dogs howl to express their pain or discomfort. Most of the domestic dogs bark and starts howling to gain attention from the owners. Dogs howl when they are irritated or upset with their food or regular activities.This ultimately makes human to pay attention and to fix the medical issues by consulting a veterinary doctor.
