Nanook, an Alaskan husky that Scott Swift and his family adopted as a pet, wasn't intended to be a rescue dog for the area. The family resides close to Alaska's Chugach Mountains' 23-mile Crow Pass Trail, where Nanook frequently goes missing for days at a time while patrolling the paths and keeping an eye out for hikers in danger. According to Scott, Nanook saves hikers who are in danger of drowning in a river or sliding down a mountainside by rescuing them and staying with them until help arrives.
When Scott and his family got Nanook, an Alaskan husky puppy, they had just recently lost a couple of cherished canines to old age. They assumed they were only expanding their family with a new pet, but ended up with more than they anticipated. When Nanook went absent for more than a day or two, Scott used to post "lost dog" notes, but he stopped when locals and hikers started telling him about Nanook's valiant exploits.
Nanook is so skilled at helping lost hikers that he keeps a tag on his collar that says "Crow Pass Guide" and has the phone numbers for Scott and his wife Jennifer on it. Many strangers have told Scott and Jennifer about their unforgettable interactions with Nanook.
Deaf hiker Amelia Milling, age 21, was on a three-day trip on the Crow Pass Trail in June 2018. Her hiking poles broke a few miles in, plunging her 300 feet down a mountainside. Amelia's rescuer Nanook came to her aid seemingly out of nowhere, staying at her side for more than 24 hours until she was well enough to continue her walk.
When Amelia attempted to cross a perilous river and was carried away by the current, Nanook saved her once more. Nanook jumped into the water, reached out with his fangs, and yanked her to safety by the straps of her bag.
"Of course, the media picked up the story [of Nanook's heroics in rescuing Amelia]," Scott said, "My phone buzzed night and day with calls from TV networks, movie production companies, and magazine and newspaper writers."
"Once a woman came up and told me that a couple of years earlier, she and [her friend] Lindsey Honemann had been hiking the Crow Pass Trail with friends. Nookie joined their group," Scott said.
"Where the path curved, high above roaring Twin Falls, Lindsey slipped on a rock. She slid toward the treacherous gorge below. Until Nookie grabbed her jacket and stopped her. That makes it three lives he has saved so far—that we know of."
"I no longer panic when Nookie disappears for days at a time," said Scott. "Nanook was put on this earth for a reason, and my job is to let him fulfill that mission.”
