When you bring a new birdie at home, it is like a
celebration time for the whole family. Everyone is simply obsessed with the
feathered beauty. But in some cases you might notice that despite your honest
efforts your birdie is not feeling comfortable with you. Here are some useful
tips to make your bird your favorite baby:
Step Up Command
The very first thing to teach the bird is the step up
command. It is actually a simple command that holds a very deep meaning for the
bird who obeys it. You need to teach him to perch on your finger whenever you
bring it near him. Once he perches and sits there quietly while you
"ride" him it sends him the message that you are the boss, the
controller and he needs to obey you.
Not only will it ensure the safety of the bird as it will be
perched on your finger while taking a safe ride, but it will also make him obey
your commands and respect you. That simply means no more bites and bleeding
fingers, no more shouting on your birdie and much more quality time playing
with your bird. Though very common in appeal, it is foundational command that
every new bird adopter must learn.
Initial Bond
The initial bonds hold a great meaning for all the birds. So
single member interaction can result in future problems when the other members
of the family would try to interact with the bird or establish bond with it. If
you think it to be appropriate to establish and strengthen a bond with your
bird before "introducing" it to the other members of the family that might
be a great mistake.
In most of the cases if a bird is habitual to a single
handler for the first few weeks of its adoption, it will not feel comfortable
with other handlers of the family and would also act obstinate with them that
include refusing to obey step up commands, biting, expressing anger at their
presence, etc. So, it is advisable to practice democracy and also let other
members of the family interact with it. The only thing you need to consider is
not to present the whole scenario as a cacophony of confused experienced but a
harmonious blend of various nice experiences.
Give Respect
It is also important to treat your bird with the respect it
deserves. It might not be able to communicate or rather complain in your
language but it does feel uncomfortable when the lights are switched on even
during its bedtime. When the children of home tease the bird in different ways
it does hurt. When a bunch of alien people (read your guests!) surround its
cage and try to touch it or confuse it with their cacophony it does scare him.
These entire experiences win you bird's hostility.
Try To Find Out the Reason
behind Its Hostility
Sometimes you are unable to understand the reason behind
your bird's hostility even if you treat it with utmost love and care. It might
have lot to do with what happened on your back. Especially if you are a working
person, you might notice that the bird shows alternate behavior. At time it gets
well with you and other times it might start biting you as you put your finger
inside the cage. So, you need to check with your family. In most of the cases
the children, in their quest of "knowing" the bird in a better way,
tease it unintentionally by plucking the feathers, repeated touching the tail
of even poking (not so) lightly with pencil or other similar things.
