Hello friends! I am your typical four legged furred companion. When my adoptee goes out on the job I use to ponder over various pet (and vet) related issues. Don’t tell him bit sometimes I also use his diaries to jot down my thoughts. So yesterday when he went to attend a wedding party, I got hold on his diary and jotted down some of my thoughts. Those thoughts revolved around thinking about how would we react if we have to pay our vet bills from our own pocket.  Here are some thoughts:

I Would Make No Bones about My Account

I don’t know why my owners take me as a status quo. Some adopters would let me suffer in agony then to pay my huge bills (BARK!) while the others will even take loans (Wow!) to get me alright. But what I fail to understand is why they don’t discuss their actual financial problem with the Vets. And I am sure the disclosure can be worthy as the Vet can either suggesting them another, non-expensive but equally effective way to treat me or some kind of relief they can get based on their present financial condition.

Regular Vaccinations

Regular vaccinations not only make me safer for my adopter and his acquaintances but also help me to remain healthy and vigorous. It can also help me remain lively and charming. And I do not fear an injection. I am a brave boy! And even if you calculate well, the regular vaccination bills are always less than the massive medicinal bills arising out of the effects of not being treated with vaccines.

Don’t “MAKE” Me Sick

Oh! Those yummy sweet cookies! So you thought I loved it so I should be stuffed with it! Is it the way to show your love? On the contrary it is recommended to decrease the session period to, say, 5 or 8 minutes as a "reward" for the birds who are fast learners.

Ideal Interaction

One of the major mistake made by many bird adopters is wrong way of initial interacting. During its initial days the bird looks at you as a Big Alien being. So if you will try to touch the bird's back or feathers, it will further increase its fears and the bird might attack in its self defense. Hence the very first impression is negative.

It will also affect the future relationship or bond between you and the birdie negatively. So the ideal way is to first communicate with the bird. The bird might not understand the words you speak but it will start recognizing your voice. After that you can start caressing its cage. The act of caressing is understood by many beings including birds. So it will make them further acquainted with you. Then you can start feeding them, first feed them by placing small bowls inside the cage and then, gradually try to feed them with the hands. Now you are doing all the acts that their natural parents would do: caring, feeding and giving them a comfortable habitat. Now you can start the step up training.

That our canine companions can get jealous is not a new finding. As back as 1871 a figure no less than Charles Darwin wrote about it. However, it wasn't scientifically proven that because of lack of proper investigation methods. But more recently the scientists found out that dogs can actually feel jealous just like human beings. The research was conducted by scientists at San Diego.

To cut long story short, 36 dog owners took an animated toy dog and played with it while their own pet dogs were nearby. It was observed that the dog’s reactions showed clear signs of jealousy. They did everything to seek their owners' attention: barking, biting, and even pushing at owner or the toy.

A dog owner Harris from America is more vocal about the jealousy in dog. She visited her parents who have adopted 3 border collies.

When Harris started patting two dogs, they kept on knocking her hands off the other dog so that she could pat each one with both her hands, not just one. "Each of them needed exclusive attention." For them patting with hands means love and they would not settle at "half love" (patting with one hand) but were vying for full love (patting with both the hands).

They can get jealous of each other

In one more experiment Friederike Range asked two dogs to perform same task individually but at the end of task only one dog was rewarded while the other was simply ignored. After a few repetitions the dog who was not rewarded stopped obeying the command. That shows that he grew jealous of his companion getting rewarded while he was being simply ignored. That also proves that dogs do feel jealousy.
