Thinks To Know Before Getting A Guinea Pig

Guinea pigs can be lovely pets. They win hearts with their little shiny eyes and become everyone’s favourite but there are a few things you should know before making that big commitment.

From expected lifespan to the social nature of guinea pigs, here are some things to consider before choosing a guinea pig as a pet.

A long time commitment

Though guinea pigs don’t have a life span equal to a dog or cat, they are still a large commitment.

They have an average life span of five to seven years and so be prepared to provide care and love during that time.

Social animals

They are a group of very social animals. They get along very well with their owners and more so with other guinea pig. It is advisable to keep another guinea pig of the same gender to avoid litters. They should be brought together in early days to promote a strong bond.

Need a large cage

Guinea pigs need large floor space and to keep a pair a large cage is needed. You can also go for a homemade cage.

They are quiet animals

Guinea pig makes a wheeking or whistling sound to get the attention of their owner or some treat. It is usually quiet and it won’t disturb you or your neighbors.

Guinea pigs require Vitamin C

They cannot manufacture their own Vitamin C and thus need it through their diet. Choosing a good quality diet and providing a variety of fresh foods is important, but most owners choose to also give their animals a vitamin C supplement. Vitamin C tablets are considered a better way to supplement it than adding vitamin C to your pet’s water.

They are easy to tame

While guinea pigs may be nervous or skittish at first, with consistent gentle handling, they usually become tame very easily. Careful handling is a must, and children should be supervised with them, but they are unlikely to bite even when stressed.

Guinea Pigs can prove themselves to be one of the best pet choices you can make. Think of getting one!
